ROUTE  B

 

   

ENTRANCE

Is was the way to the bases. All the entrances were built by the with the civilians' help (building stone wall, cutting down trees ...)

 

1. LIME KILN

These are the archaeological temains of a lime kiln (XVII-XIX). The limestone of the area was obtained by heating the limestone to obtain lime, which was used as disinfectant, mortar, liming walls ...

 

2. QUARRY

The soldiers used the stone that dug out to build different architectural structures: walls, latrines, channels...

 

3. LIVING QUARTERS

The First living platform quarter. In this platform there used to be eight the same way as you see this one. They were used to lodge the soldiers who would stay for 10-15 days at the Base.

It had bunk beds and a coal and wood heater. It lodged about forty soldiers.

 

4. LATRINE

It was used in the army camp. It hade of a wooden floor, reed walls and a dead well, which is 5 metres deep.

 

5. BARRACKS (LOCATION)

The place to build a living quarter. We can see the size, the stairs and the canals to lead the rain. This one, as many others, were burnt down by the republican soldiers before leaving the Base.

 

6. ANTI-AIRCRAFT SHELTER

Underground gallery dug by the soldiers at the foot of the hill. It is 1.70 m high, 0.90 m wide and 130 m long. It was udes to protect themselves during a bomb raid. There are two entrances to provide easy access, evacuation and give ventilation.

 

7. MAGAZINE ANTI-ARICRAFT SHELTER

This underground gallery with only one entrance and an iron gate, was used to store the explosive and guns. It is 25 m long and like the other shelters has a four shape to avoid grapeshot and also the expansive wave in case of an explosion at the entrance.

 

8. AIR RAID SHELTER

In the forest near the pathways we different entrances to the shelters. This entrance joins with another within a few metres on the way up.

 

9. SWISS STYLE TENTS

Area with the remains of 12 Swiss tents. Their diameter is 6 m. And they had a wooden pole in the centre and a conic lone. Each tent sheltered about 20 soldiers and their equipment.

 

10. FIRESIDE

The soldiers stay here to warm themselves up, chat, eat... Behind, there are some stairs which led to the kitchen.

 

11. MODEL TENT

There is a wooden floor at the entrance and some straw on the ground,where they slept. The wall at the side and in the middle were used as shelves.

 

12. HOUSES

These are samll homes built by the soldiers. They had a fire place and the roof was made with beams.

 

13. ANTI-AIRCRAFT DEFENCE

The room contains a guard bunker and ammunition with a fireplace, a trench of connection and an anti aircraft gunfire standing on a stone made pillar.

 

14. UNDERGROUND HOM

These homes were built digging out the needed space and then a roof made of geams and corrugated iron covered the home.

 

15. SECOND PLATFORM OF BARRACKS

Here starts the second platform of living quarters. There were nine and the last was used as a theatre and other leisure activities.

 

16. ENTRANCES TO AIR-RAID SHELTERS

In this platform there are 8 entrances to the shalters to lodge the soldiers. Every two living quarters, there was one entrance.

 

17. QUARIES

The needed stones were dug out here to build the wall to protect the living quarters.

 

18. THE THEATRE

This was the biggest and it was used as a theatre and leisure activities..

 

19. AIR RAID DEFENCE

The room contains a guard bunker and ammunition with a fire place, a trench of connection and an air-raid gunfire standing on a stone pillar.
